Science

At Key Stage 4 pupils study for an Edexcel Entry Level Certificate in Science. The curriculum broadly covers elements from the three sciences biology, chemistry and physics. We are also hoping to offer a number of OCN Level 1 Units in Science.

Year 10 students have already completed a biology based topic 'Classification and Variation' which involved looking at:

  • the structure of a simple animal cell and a simple plant cell
  • the classification of living things
  • variation in humans
  • inheritance of characteristics
  • genetic disorders
  • evolution

Year 11 students have already completed the biology topics 'Sending Messages around the Body' and 'Staying Fit and Healthy'. The two topics involved carrying out practicals focused around the senses and how the body functions.

On completion of the topics students went on a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester where they attended an exhibition on how the 'Brain Works'.

Year 11 students are currently looking at two physics based topics ‘Electricity: its Productions and its Applications’ and ‘Exploring the Earth and Space’.

Students have been taking on the role of electrical engineers as they have built their own electrical circuits.

They have used ICT to create PowerPoint presentations on the solar system and had fun comparing the planet earth to that of a boiled egg. Students have attempted to simulate there very own volcanic eruption in the lab, an experiment which proved to be very messy but effective

Science Trips

Students have been on a number of science trips ranging from Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, Birmingham Think Tank and Manchester Museum.

This has given students the opportunity to put the science they have learned into practice and see how technology has impacted and enhanced everyday life
