Secondary Pathway 1

Secondary Pathway 1

In this pathway, the adapted National Curriculum for Maths is delivered creatively to build upon the skills and knowledge learnt in the primary pathways.

Number

During this pathway, pupils will continue to explore aspects of number and place value in a variety of forms and explore higher numbers and begin calculating these higher numbers. They will continue to further develop their knowledge and skills linked to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and they will be introduced to a variety of mental and formal approaches/methods. The pupils will also be exploring more complex fractions and decimals.

These concepts are taught to the pupils' abilities and they will have the opportunity to use both practical and written activities and also using differentiated strategies/methods to aid their understanding of these concepts.

As with the other pathways, the application of these skills to real-life situations and problems will be an ongoing focus throughout this pathway.

Measure and Geometry

The pupils will continue to build on and develop their understanding of length, mass, capacity and temperature. They will be measuring, ordering and comparing different lengths, weights, capacities and temperatures and also beginning to understand the relationships between the different units e.g. mm, cm and m. The pupils will then progress on to converting between the units. As they progress through this pathway, pupils will be learning to tell a range of times on both analogue and digital clocks and learning how to show times on these clocks.

Our pupils will also build on their skills linked to Geometry. They will be able to recognise, sort, name and describe 2D and 3D shapes and their properties independently and they will use a variety of mathematical vocabulary such as edges, sides, corners, faces and vertices. As they progress through this pathway, they will be furthering their skills by exploring symmetry, angles, positions and turns of shapes, finding the perimeter and the area of 2D shapes and also plotting coordinates onto a grid.

Using and Applying

Throughout this pathway, pupils will be provided with opportunities to use and apply their Number, Measure and Geometry skills in a variety of problem-solving opportunities as well as building on their Using and Applying specific skills. These opportunities will be provided in both Maths specific lessons and across a variety of different subject areas to ensure the pupils develop a rich and deep understanding of the different areas/concepts of Maths.

Data Handling

Pupils in this pathway will continue to develop and further their understanding of ‘data handling’. They will be constructing simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams, bar chart, Venn diagrams and simple tables. The pupils will also be interpreting and answering 2-step questions about the data presented in these graphs/charts which may have a more complex scale.
