Secondary Pathway 2
In this pathway, the adapted National Curriculum for English is delivered creatively and builds upon the skills and knowledge learnt in the Primary Pathways. Each unit for this pathway is based upon a high quality fiction text chosen to match the abilities and interests of the pupils. Pupils also explore non-fiction genres such as simple information texts, instructions, recounts and letters. Pupils in this pathway learn about poetry through rhymes and songs and learn how to perform them.
Reading: Books and reading are celebrated and pupils read frequently. Daily story time sessions occur and pupils are encouraged to explore books for pleasure. Pupils in this pathway are supported to access the Rapid Reading and Phonics program through guided reading sessions to develop their reading and comprehension skills. Individual pupils may require adapted phonics and reading activities to develop their skills.
Writing: Pupils continue to develop their fine motor skills and letter formation in this pathway. They are encouraged to write for a purpose as much as possible and writing activities are tailored to the pupils’ needs. There are opportunities for pupils to continue to develop their ability to write words and structure simple sentences in their writing.
Communication: Speaking, listening and communication is central to the teaching of the English curriculum. Role play, learning through play and opportunities to explore sensory activities all provide an opportunity to enhance the curriculum and develop communication skills. Pupils in this pathway have the opportunity to develop their ability to combine ideas and concepts, follow instructions and ask and answer simple questions. Some pupils may use Makaton and PECS to do this.
