Primary Pathway 3

Primary Pathway 3

In this pathway, the adapted KS2 National Curriculum for English is delivered creatively to build upon the skills and knowledge learnt in Primary Pathway 1. Each unit for this pathway is based upon a high quality fiction text; including those with interesting characters and settings, stories from other cultures and points in history, as well as stories with issues and dilemmas. Pupils also learn about the non-fiction genres of recounts, instructions, reports, persuasion and explanation. Pupils in this pathway explore the structure of different types of poetry and work towards creating their own.

Reading: Books and reading are celebrated and pupils read frequently. Daily story time sessions occur and pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure. Pupils in this pathway are supported to access the Rapid Reading and Phonics program through guided reading sessions to develop their reading and comprehension skills.

Writing: Pupils are encouraged to write as much as possible and use writing across all areas of the curriculum. We support pupils to continue to develop their fine motor skills and letter formation throughout this pathway. Pupils are taught sentence structures, grammar and punctuation; and how to use these in different types of writing.

Communication: Opportunities to develop the pupils’ speaking, listening and communication skills are planned throughout this pathway. Pupils work towards developing their ability to ask and answer more complex ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions and learn how to respond to others. There are opportunities to develop their conversation and discussion skills and to improve their knowledge of how to communicate in different situations.
