Art & Design

Curriculum Statement

Inspiring the artists, designers and makers of the future.

At Watermill School we believe that all children should have opportunities to explore, create, be imaginative and express themselves through art, craft and design.  We endeavour to instil a love and appreciation for all art forms, to be inquisitive, to wonder and to investigate the possibilities.  We want our pupils to become confident artists, to foster a ‘have a go’ attitude and to understand that ‘mistakes’ are vital to the creative learning process.

We want our pupils to recognise and appreciate the beauty in everyday things, to experience colour and pattern in different contexts, to explore mark making and texture, to learn how to build, sculpt and construct.

We want our pupils to develop a curiosity about the world; to make connections between the natural world and art and to know about art, craft and design from our local community as well as from cultures and communities from around the world.

We aspire to develop the next generation of artists, designers and makers.

Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing.  Making your unknown known is the important thing.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” – Pablo Picasso

“The true use of art is, first, to cultivate the artist’s own spiritual nature.” – George Inness

“Art is a line around your thoughts” Gustav Klimt
